Objective

Guess a hidden organism; each incorrect guess places you on the shared clade, progressively narrowing the possible location on the evolutionary tree.

Playlin'sGuide

Grebe is a collection of daily biology puzzles played on the tree of life, the evolutionary diagram that connects every living organism through shared ancestry.

The site offers distinct games, each testing a different angle of your taxonomic knowledge. The games reset daily with new puzzles that are identical for everyone.

Lineage is the flagship mode. You guess a hidden organism. Each wrong answer places your guess on the tree at the clade it shares with the target, gradually boxing in where the mystery species sits.

Kinship gives you sixteen species and asks you to sort them into four hidden groups of four based on shared clades. It works like Connections, but for evolutionary relationships.

Branches is a drag and drop tree builder. You position each species onto the correct branch using partial examples as scaffolding, reconstructing

Why we like it:

  • βœ…Teaches you actual biology while you play, not just trivia.
  • βœ…Multiple games means different ways to think about the same beautiful idea.
  • βœ…Watching the tree narrow in Lineage is deeply satisfying.

Hint: In Lineage, start broad. Guess a plant, a fungus, an insect, and a mammal early to triangulate which kingdom you are even working within. Narrow from there.
