Hexpiece is a daily chess puzzle where your mission is to place one of each piece (pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen, king) on a standard 8x8 board to maximize coverage, the total number of squares that are either occupied or under attack.
Each day gives you a new board configuration with blocked squares that cannot be used. Your job is to arrange all six pieces to control as much territory as possible. Blocked squares also interrupt sliding attacks from bishops, rooks, and queens, adding a layer of strategic complexity.
- Place exactly one of each piece (P, N, B, R, Q, K) on the board.
- Blocked squares cannot hold pieces and stop sliding attacks.
- Your score equals the number of squares covered (occupied or attacked).
- Sliding pieces (bishop, rook, queen) are blocked by other pieces and obstacles.
- Knights jump over everything.
- Pawns attack diagonally forward as White.
- Two modes: Classic (maximize your score) or Perfect (find the optimal solution).

Hint: Start with your queen and rook since they cover the most ground. Place them on open diagonals or ranks first, then fill in the gaps with your shorter range pieces. Blocked squares are your enemy and your friend, use them to funnel attacks where you need them.
