Objective

Solve each clue, extract the highlighted soundbite, then combine the sounds to reveal the mystery word.

Playlin'sGuide

SoundBites is a daily word puzzle from Slate where your mission is to solve clues, collect soundbites, and pronounce them together to reveal the final mystery word.

Each clue answer contains a highlighted letter or group of letters. That highlighted piece is the soundbite, but what matters is how it sounds in the original word, not just how it looks.

For example, GH in “enough” can make an F sound.

How it works:

  • Solve each clue to fill in the answer.
  • Look for the highlighted letter or letter group in that answer.
  • Treat that piece as the sound it makes in the solved word.
  • Combine all the soundbites in order.
  • Say them out loud to solve the final mystery word.
  • Use the alternate clue or reveal letter tools if you get stuck.

Why we like it:

  • Turns the weirdness of English spelling into the whole game.
  • Feels fresh even if you play a lot of daily word puzzles.
  • The final “say it out loud” moment is super satisfying.

Hint: Don’t read the soundbites as normal text. Pronounce each one the way it sounds inside its clue answer, then blend them together.
