๐ŸŽฏ Hints for Stackdown (with Examples)

Stackdown hints for each word can be revealed with the slider at the bottom of the game. You can't miss it. Use it!

Revealing hints will affect your final score, but it's better to use hints and have fun (that's why they're there!) than to get stuck and quit.

Real Examples of Stackdown Hints

(From Stackdown #230, Oct 27, 2025 โ€” for illustration only)

Real clues from Stackdown #230 (archived example that shows the clue style used in the game):

  • Hint 1: A rolled bundle of tobacco (word: CIGAR)
  • Hint 2: A cheerful expression, rather like the Cheshire Cat (word: SMILE)
  • Hint 3: Elaborate or ornate (word: FANCY)
  • Hint 4: Postage or approval? (word: STAMP)
  • Hint 5: A long search for something important (word: QUEST)
  • Hint 6: Side of something (word: FLANK)

๐Ÿ”ค Letter Pattern Hints

Each Stackdown word is exactly 5 letters long. Spotting patterns quickly helps you zero in on the right word faster.

A few quick things to look for:

  • Getting Started โ€“ Look at the letter distribution chart above. The majority of 5-letter words begin with less than half of the English alphabet.
  • Every word needs vowels โ€“ Decide if you prefer to think of vowels or consonants first.
  • Double letters happen โ€“ Watch for words with LL, EE, SS, or OO.
  • Is the only vowel a Y? โ€“ If so, look below for a shortlist of all 5-letter words with Y as the only vowel. Some of them are double-Y. Seriously.
  • See a Q? โ€“ Pair it with a U that's either in-play or slightly buried.

Bonus: Notice letter pairs you encounter often (like ST, TR, or CR). They reappear across puzzles more than youโ€™d think.

๐Ÿ’ก Quick Tip: Stuck? Swipe to reveal the hint.

5-Letter Words with Y as the Only Vowel

If Y is the only vowel available, here are known "common" 5-letter words to consider:

  • CRYPT
  • DRYLY
  • GLYPH
  • GYPSY
  • LYMPH
  • LYNCH
  • MYRRH
  • NYMPH
  • PYGMY
  • SHYLY
  • SLYLY
  • TRYST
  • WRYLY

๐Ÿชœ Quick Strategy Boosters

When Logic Beats Luck

Remember, only one valid word exists at a time. Trial-and-error can work eventually, but using letter logic and strategy saves you time and stars.

When You're Stuck

  • Think common words โ€“ Stackdown rarely uses obscure vocabulary. Think everyday words.
  • Iterate โ€“ Pick one exposed starting letter and test every real 5-letter word you can think of beginning with it. The correct word will fit naturally once youโ€™ve ruled others out.
  • Want to reset fast? โ€“ Just tap the first letter of the guess row to reset the current letters.

Avoid These Traps

  • Don't tunnel vision โ€“ If a word "almost" works, it probably doesn't. Move on.
  • Watch for valid vs. invalid โ€“ The game will reject invalid words, but don't waste moves testing nonsense.
