Objective

Identify the author, decade, nationality, and title of each excerpt within five guesses.

Playlin'sGuide

Bevel is a daily literary deduction game where your mission is to identify the author, decade, nationality, and title of a passage from just its prose, redacted names and all.

Each puzzle presents a short excerpt with character names blacked out, so you can't lean on a famous name to cheat the deduction. You read the style, the diction, the rhythm of the sentences, and build your case from there.

  • Read the passage carefully. Names are redacted, but voice and detail remain.
  • Fill in your guess for author, decade, nationality, and title.
  • You have 5 guesses total.
  • A wrong guess unlocks a new hint to guide your next attempt.
  • Decade and nationality can register as close if you're in the right neighborhood, author and title are simply right or wrong.
  • Dropdown lists offer today's shortlist of candidates, but you can type any answer you like.

Why we like it:

  • βœ…It rewards close reading over trivia knowledge, so careful readers have a real edge.
  • βœ…The partial credit system for decade and nationality keeps near misses interesting instead of frustrating.
  • βœ…A fresh passage each day means you might meet an author you've never read before.

Hint: Focus on sentence construction and vocabulary before worrying about plot. A writer's syntax often gives away their era and tradition long before any detail in the story does.
