LinguaBoard is a daily language puzzle from MachineTranslation.com where you fill a 3x3 grid by matching languages to intersecting categories in 9 guesses.
Each cell sits at the crossroads of a row category and a column category. Your job is to find a language that satisfies both. Row categories might be geographic (like "Spoken in Asia"), linguistic (like "A tonal language"), or cultural. Column categories follow the same logic. Click a cell, search for a language, and see if it fits.
- Each cell needs a language that matches both its row and its column.
- You have 9 guesses total across the entire grid, not per cell.
- Multiple correct answers exist for most cells, but rarity matters.
- Correct guesses are color coded: green for common, yellow for uncommon, purple for rare.
- Wrong guesses turn red and eat one of your 9 attempts.
- A new puzzle drops every day.
The strategy is twofold. First, map out the easiest intersections to lock in safe answers. Second, chase rare languages for bragging rights. Purple squares make your shared result look sharp.
Why we like it:
- β Rewards deep knowledge without punishing casual players who stick to the obvious.
- β Every puzzle is a crash course in linguistic geography and typology.
- β The rarity system adds replay value even after you solve it.
Hint: Start with the most restrictive intersections. A cell asking for a tonal language spoken in East Asia has fewer candidates than one asking for any Asian language with over 50 million speakers. Solve the narrow ones first, then mop up the broad ones with your leftover guesses.
