Cartology is a daily geography game that challenges you to identify the compass bearing between two locations using nothing but your mental map and spatial intuition.
Each day, you're given a named target city and an unnamed starting point somewhere on the globe. Your job is to figure out which direction you'd need to travel. North? Southeast? West-northwest? Pick the bearing that gets you from here to there.
- You're shown a target location by name and an unmarked starting point on the map.
- Choose the correct compass bearing that points from start to finish.
- The game tests your ability to visualize geography and orientation without traditional navigation tools.
- A new challenge drops every day.
- Sign in to track your progress and high scores over time.
The site also offers Cartology Classic for multi-level challenges and MapLinks, a separate mode where you try to reach a target location in the fewest clicks.
Why we like it:
- β It trains a skill most of us have let atrophy in the GPS era.
- β Fast enough to play on a coffee break, tricky enough to make you think.
- β You walk away with a better sense of where places actually sit relative to each other.
Hint: Picture the globe as a sphere, not a flat map. Latitude matters more than you think. A bearing from Moscow to Tokyo is very different from Moscow to Madrid, even if they look similar distances apart on your screen.
